Quranic Arabic

As Arabic is the language of the Quran, Ahlebayt (a) and one of the official languages of the United Nations, our courses focus on Classical Arabic (fuṣḥā), which is essential for understanding the Quran, Hadith and Supplications (Duas).

It's important to note that the course is designed for students who are able to recite Quran and have a basic understanding of the Arabic alphabet. The goal of the program is to enable students to read and comprehend the Quran and Hadiths of Ahlebayt (a), it's not intended for conversational and composition skills. The program is divided into four levels as follows:

Level 1: Quranic Lessons

Many Muslims can read the Quran in Arabic, but they are not able to understand the meaning of what they are reading as they are not familiar with the language. Although they receive rewards for reading the Quran, they are not able to fully benefit from it as their understanding is limited. In level 1, participants will learn basic Quranic Arabic, commonly used words and phrases in the Quran, and elementary grammar. The main focus of this course is on the comprehension of the Quranic text. The curriculum includes 20 lessons, with formative assessments based on Quranic phrases and Supplication of Jawshan-e-Kabeer, and summative assessments in the form of multiple-choice questions on the Kahoot platform.

Level 3: Morphology (الصرف)

Morphology is the study of the way words are constructed and put together, including the use of root words and additional letters (or templates). This field typically focuses on two key areas: how words are formed and how they relate to syntax:

  • The formation of words (derivational or lexical morphology)
  • The relationship between words and sentence structure (inflectional morphology, such as marking for gender, number, case, and tense)
This field explores how words change forms to convey different meanings, and encompasses the following main topics:
  1. Conjugation:
    1. The study of how Arabic verbs are formed from a set of base letters and how they change form to reflect tense, gender, plurality, voice, and other aspects.
    2. The examination of nouns in the language that are also derived from a set of base letters and how they conjugate.
  2. Verb paradigms - Enhancing the meaning and adding nuances to the basic verbal form and its conjugations by adding extra letters.
  3. Verb irregularities - Investigating the conjugation of verbs (basic and enhanced) and derived nouns when they have certain "weak" letters.
The curriculum includes 40 lessons and the formative assessment methods include Quranic phrases, Hadiths, and Supplications, and the summative assessments consist of six written tests.

Level 4: Syntax (النحو)

This course is a comprehensive study of Arabic syntax that requires participants to have a high level of understanding of Morphology. It covers the structure of Arabic sentences, including the different classifications of sentences and the components that make up a sentence. Students will gain a detailed understanding of the Arabic case system and how nouns interact with verbs and prepositions based on their role in the sentence. The course includes 26 lessons and will be assessed through formative assessments using Arabic text, and summative assessments in the form of four written tests. Upon completion, students will be able to understand the complexities of classical traditional texts and advanced Arabic literature written by scholars.
